A part of last year that was particularly difficult was seeing all these babies with parents I knew that I couldn’t see. We FaceTimed, but it wasn’t the same as an in-person snuggle. When vaccines became more widely available, it was joyful to see families reunite and celebrate. Inquiries for family sessions in the SF Bay Area returned and I was more than happy to say yes to celebrate the families that have grown over the last few years!
When you don’t practice a skill for a moment, you have a voice in your head wonders if you still remember how to do it. I’m happy to report that it’s just like riding a bike and you get back into the groove easily after some initial nerves.
One client said “you made my mom heart explode” which I thought was the best compliment to any family photographer! It was a mutual feeling as taking photos for families again made me have a full-circle moment. It’s how I started in photography, and it was good to know that I still had a business after all that has happened.
6-7 month old sessions
My personal sweet spot for family sessions is 6 to 7 months old. This is for a few reasons. I find that the babies are able to sit up, smile, but not be too mobile where you end up running after them. Moms have had some time to recover from the birth process and are usually into some kind of routine with their kiddo which makes them feel more able to take on a family photo session! They can let me know what time their baby does the best!

Family Photo Session for Benji
Benji is a joy! He’s one of the happiest babies I’ve seen and was a dream to work with! I’ve been lucky enough to work with his family for multiple sessions in the past! His brother Jake had a session when he was born a few years ago! This time we went to their neighborhood park. Here’s what we came up with!

Family photo session for Luke

Luke is so expressive! He goes through a wide range of emotions in a short period of time. I suggested that some of his pictures become emojis and his dad said, maybe it will! He’s also learned how to be wiggly and he’s always on the go! Just like his parents the world travelers!

This cute outfit is how his parents announced that they were pregnant, and purposefully picked for the shoot. I love when we can find hidden meanings in little details that insiders know about. It’s a thread that ties it all together!
Conclusion
It’s been a joy to experience family sessions again in the SF Bay Area with returning and new clients! There’s something about being out again with those you haven’t seen and sharing new moments together. Especially when the moments are adorable!
