I’ve had a lot of questions from people asking my pivot. Why I left my stable, benefitted, medical position. I’m a Physician Assistant, specifically a surgical first assistant, meaning that I assist in surgeries, and I still am. Just not as my primary job where I spend most of my working hours. I’ve helped do a lot of procedures like hernia repairs, weight loss surgery, brain surgery, fix fractures, replace joints, etc. I’ve helped precept many students that are wanting to get into this field. So then the question is why-why would you leave? Didn’t I spend a lot of years in training to have this job?
The short answer is that it just didn’t light me up anymore. I spent nine years doing that, so I felt like I made an investment back into the field. I had a solid understanding of what that life was like if I continued that path. It started to feel like it was something that I was doing to pay the bills, and while that is indeed respectable and there’s nothing wrong with that. That’s not the life I wanted to live. I want to create a life that I was excited about rather than a life that I was just ok with.
When people ask you what you would do with your life if money were no object. I couldn’t say that this is what I would choose. I had a to-do list a mile long of other projects and life interests that I want to pursue. I have every intention of continuing to help people, but in a different way. It’s now to promote their work, to make them feel confident about themselves, and help them to achieve their goals and dreams. Perhaps sharing this story will inspire someone to pursue their dreams and making it into their reality.
“Well, aren’t you lucky?” Is a response I was also met with. We are not independently wealthy and don’t have the resources to do whatever we want. But, we made a plan with this in mind, and we saved. We looked at all our options, and we made some significant changes. We moved to a Sacramento which a lower cost of living to make photography our new reality. Another other truth is that I will continue to work per diem as my own Venture Capitalist to fund myself in my business. You can do this too if this is the life that you want.
Cheers, friends! To all your dreams, may they become your reality as well!
